- The concept of Scripture Study is not to impose guilt, it is to improve happiness and stability. Guilt is not a spiritual gift.
- Scriptures were meant to be understood.
- The Devil wages war against the scriptures, He hates them, perverts their plain meaning, and destroys them when he can. He entices those who heed his temptings to delete and discard, to change and corrupt, to alter and amend. - Bruce R McConkie
- "Drink more from the pure waters then the deluded ones." Always remember there is no satisfactory substitute for the scriptures and the words of the living prophets. These should be your original sources. Read and ponder more what the Lord has said and less about what others have written concerning what the Lord said - Ezra Taft Benson
2. Make a blueprint for study
- Select the scriptural work most interesting to you.
- Design a timetable to fit your own circumstances.
3. Warm Up!
- Pray before reading
- The ability to read and enjoy the scriptures requires preparation, prayer, and reverence where as anyone can pick up a news magazine and begin to read and understand it without the slightest effort at preparation. The next time you have a moment to read, purposefully pick up your scriptures, then pray, seek for the spirit of God to guide you in your reading and you will begin to get more from your scripture study.
4. Study with your head and your heart
- D&C :1
- 1 Ne 19:23
- Blessed because of Faith, not success
- Arise, you cannot arise if you haven't fallen.
5. Have a Marking System
- The best marking system is your own. Begin by highlighting the parts that are most meaningful and beautiful to you; expand from there as you desire.
- You learn more when you take notes or highlight.
6. Slow down; you often learn faster by going slower!
- Read deep, not wide
- Generally, read slow for understanding, fast for overview.
- When we mistake the scriptures for a quick meal instead of a fewast, we choke, trying to down something so rich too fast.
7. Pondering
- During reading, new insights will often begin to form 1 Ne 1:12
8. Make Application
9. Talk about your reading with others and Heavenly Father
10. Go Prospecting
